What if a microscope could not tell the difference between one molecule and a pair of molecules? Similar to how the Webb Telescope discerns binary stars from the shells of cosmic dust they create, microscopes in the Lew Lab must measure both how molecules interact with polarized light and details within their polarized images to discern two molecules from one. Biomolecular condensates often appear like soap bubbles but are actually more like silly putty, featuring mostly elastic and viscous behaviors on different timescales. A closer look at biomolecular ‘silly putty’

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have developed a method to peer into biomolecular condensates, which could lead to a better understanding of condensate functions and their impairment in cancers and neurodegeneration.
